Healthcare and Insurance in Thailand: What to Check Before You Buy a Policy
· Shambala Editorial

Phuket has both major private international hospitals and public tertiary-care facilities, but private treatment — hospitalisation, surgery, intensive care — can be expensive, so understanding a policy's coverage and exclusions matters more than comparing premiums alone.
Main Phuket hospitals
- Bangkok Hospital Phuket — 200-bed private hospital with 24-hour emergency care
- Bangkok Hospital Siriroj — private, internationally accredited, 24-hour emergency and trauma
- Vachira Phuket Hospital — 650-bed public tertiary-care hospital, 24-hour emergency
- Thailand's emergency medical number is 1669
Waiting periods and pre-existing conditions
There's no single rule here — it's product-specific. As examples, AXA's SmartCare and EasyCare Visa plans list 30 days for illness and 120 days for certain named conditions; other insurers publish their own schedules. Pre-existing conditions are the detail to read most carefully: some insurers exclude them outright, while others may cover a condition after a defined symptom-free period under strict terms. Disclose medical history accurately — it's the policy wording, not the marketing page, that decides a claim.
Insurance tied to a visa
Requirements vary by category: O-A and O-X carry specific health-insurance minimums, LTR visas can satisfy the healthcare criterion through qualifying insurance or another permitted arrangement, and DTV currently has no general mandatory insurance requirement — though comprehensive cover is still worth having for a long stay. AXA and Allianz both publish products built specifically for the O-A/O-X/LTR criteria.
Before you buy, compare
- Annual and per-illness limits, plus inpatient vs. outpatient cover
- Waiting periods and pre-existing-condition terms
- Deductible, co-payment and the hospital network — is direct billing included
- Evacuation, repatriation and whether cover is Thailand-only or international
This is general information, not medical or insurance advice. Read the full policy wording, exclusions and benefit schedule before buying. Checked 25 September 2026.
