Opening a Bank Account in Thailand as a Foreigner

· Shambala Editorial

A Thai bank account isn't just convenient — it's often the only accepted evidence for a retirement extension, a marriage-based extension, or a DTV renewal, since immigration generally wants to see funds seasoned in a Thai account, not a foreign one. Getting one open, though, depends heavily on your visa and which branch you walk into.

What changed in 2026

Since January 2026, Bangkok Bank has treated the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) as tourist-level and stopped opening new accounts for DTV and tourist-visa holders; a Non-B, Non-O, ED or LTR visa, or a retirement extension, is now generally expected. Other banks have tightened too, though less uniformly — approval still varies noticeably by branch, not just by bank.

Which banks foreigners actually get into

  • Bangkok Bank: still considered the most foreigner-friendly overall, particularly branches in Silom, Sukhumvit and Chiang Mai — but no longer an option for DTV or tourist visas
  • Kasikornbank (K PLUS): a strong English-language app, with expat-heavy branches (Asoke, Sathorn) more accustomed to foreign paperwork
  • SCB: stricter on paperwork generally, but often the most accommodating bank for LTR visa holders
  • Krungthai and Krungsri: government-linked and worth trying if the main three decline you

What to bring

  • Passport, and your current visa — a long-term category (Non-B, Non-O, ED, LTR, or a retirement extension) rather than a tourist stamp or DTV
  • Proof of a Thai address: a rental agreement, a recent utility bill, or a TM30 registration slip
  • A work permit or proof of income where the bank asks for it — requirements differ by visa type and branch
  • For a retirement extension specifically: the ฿800,000 needs to sit in the Thai account for the required seasoning period — a foreign account does not satisfy this

Policies vary by bank and even by branch, and can change with little notice. This isn't financial advice — confirm current requirements with the specific bank before your appointment. Checked 25 September 2026.
